Sabonis Basketball Academy: the pride of Kaunas

During my recent trip to Kaunas to cover the Nike International Junior tournament, I also had the chance to visit the Sabonis Basketball Academy. The Sabonio Krepsinio Mokykla as it is called in Lithuanian is generally considered as one of the best basketball academies in Europe so it was interesting to see how it works and how they develop young players for Zalgiris Kaunas and the Lithuanian National Team.

The third event of this season’s Nike International Junior Tournament Qualification phase is done. In Lithuania, eight teams fought for the win but it was the home team of Zalgiris Kaunas which easily dominated the competition. No team was close to have a chance against them which underlined the overall mediocre level of the tournament. But let’s check first the major guard potentials that excelled during the three days in Kaunas.

Dennis Schröder breaks out for real

Dennis Schröder has developed into a household name among German basketball followers over the last years. The Braunschweig PG showed his class during the NBBL Top4 last season but has now become a major factor for the Braunschweig professional team over the last games. Together with his team mate Daniel Theis who is finding his way into the rotation as well, he represents the future of his team. He scored respectively 14 and 12 points in the last two games and will travel to Berlin today for a matchup with the highest German level.

KK Baltai: Zalgiris reserve struggles in BBL

During the trip to Kaunas for the Nike International Junior Tournament, I had also the opportunity to follow a game of KK Baltai playing University of Tartu in the Baltic League. KK Baltai is in fact the reserve team of Zalgiris Kaunas and one of the several places where the Lithuanian Euroleague team can stack some of their 46 players currently under contract. With the recent addition of Jonas Maciulis, Baltai had a surprise win during last week but it was not enough this time against the Estonians of University of Tartu. The roster of Baltai features some interesting players so here is the report about them.

The second day in the ice-cold Kaunas started again in the early morning in an arena that had some problem with the heating as it was freezing inside. Still not many spectators made the trip and the prospects had to play in front of only very few people.

The first Nike International Junior Tournament of the year but the third already of the 2011-2012 season started this morning very early in Kaunas. In the huge Zalgiris Arena in front of a handful spectators in the beginning, the tournament is looking for a third team to qualify for the Final event in Istanbul.

Furkan Aldemir makes his mark in the Euroleague

The 2m07 tall player, who recently even got votes for being among the best international player not in the NBA by the General Manager of the American league, is averaging this season 6.8ppg, 4.8rpg and 0.4bpg in the Euroleague. David Jelinek does the Scoring Machine

David Jelinek, the Czech Shooting Guard is already in his fifth season with the Spanish team Joventut Badalona. After having arrived in 2007 to play with the Junior Team, the Brno native spent several seasons with the Joventut farm team at Prat where he gained experience on the professional level. In 2010, he started his first full season with the ACB team and finished with 7.0ppg at 40.4% from the field and 45.7% from behind the arc. This season, he has increased his scoring and his role in the rotation but his shooting percentages have gone down below 40%. We checked his game recently in an overtime win against Unicaja Malaga where the Czech had his best game of the season.
