NBBL Top 4 Preview: Bazou Kante (Bremerhaven)

May 18th, 2012 · 1 Comment

In the second part of our Preview to the upcoming NBBL Top 4 in Hagen, we spoke with the electric guard from Eisbären Bremerhaven Bazou Kante. The Ivorian native played already last season in the Top 4 when he was still with Braunschweig.

Eisbären Bremerhaven have reached the NBBL Top 4 for the first time. Have you surpassed your own expectations or do you believe that you can win the title?

Yes, our initial goal were the Playoffs and by reaching the Top 4, we have certainly surpassed our expectations.

After a first very defensive game in the Quarter-Finals against ALBA Berlin, you won at home after overtime. What was the decisive point for this surprising qualification?

We were stronger as a team and have believed in ourselves. We were not impressed by the big names and simply played our own game.

You reached already the Top 4 last season with Braunschweig. Is the qualification this time a bigger success because you played without top talents like Daniel Theis and Dennis Schröder who were big factors last spring?

For me it is all the same, either a team plays well together or not. Of course, we had less talent than in Braunschweig but this team in Bremerhaven was a better group.

Personally, you had a season with several ups and downs and missed several games. How are you satisfied with your personal development?

Yes, it was a disappointing season for me, I had a lot of different long injuries in the beginning of the season. I was lucky that my coach always believed in me and supported me in every situation. Now, I am playing nearly two months without any injury and I am finding back my rhythm. At the moment, I am satisfied, the playoffs are running very well for me.

What were the reasons that you left Braunschweig and moved to Bremerhaven last summer?

The main reason was the scholar situation in Bremerhaven. I want to get a good high school degree and play successful basketball next to that. Here in Bremerhaven, I have a better environment for doing that.

How do you see your future? With the new rule of 6+6 in the BBL, did you get a promise for a roster spot with the professional or where will you head at after the season?

I had some small discussions with the management here in Bremerhaven and I got offered a spot in the professional team. But right now, I do not think about that, I am concentrated on the Top 4 which is my priority.

Bazou Kante is a 1m90 tall shooting guard. He averaged 10.8ppg (58.0% 2FGs – 16.7% 3FGs), 3.3rpg, 3.4apg and 1.7spg over the NBBL season.
