NBA Draft 2014: Ioannis Papapetrou

The Greek forward who played one season at Texas before coming back to Greece can be considered as a solid NBA prospect right now. Physically, he was probably the strongest player at the Adidas Eurocamp in Treviso as he could dominate anyone by muscling his way to the basket. While this will not be the case anymore if he plays in the NBA, Papapetrou looks like one of the more readier prospects coming from Europe despite being only 20 years old. Papapetrou can play both forward positions as he is capable to handle the ball, also in transition, but he can post up as well against physically weaker forwards. He is also a nice Pick and Pop threat as he can score from behind the arc even if he needs to become more regular. The Greek forward plays quite aggressively when he puts the ball on the floor as he wants to get to the basket on any occasion. He can finish at the rim with either hand and draws a good amount of fouls. After a year of high-level College Basketball and one season in the Euroleague, Papapetrou is certainly one of the most experienced players in this year’s NBA Draft pool.

After rushing his way out of University of Texas Ioannis Papapetrou signed a multi year contract in Greece (buyout after the end of the 3rd season) with Olympiakos. After a rough first half of the season, in which the Greek forward suffered a couple of unlucky injuries, Papapetrou was able to crack Olympiakos’ rotation and showed that he’s capable of being the team’s primary option at the small forward position in the next couple of seasons. What stands out when watching Papapetrou in person is his body; with Papapetrou there’s no need to expect him to add strength or develop his frame, because it’s already there. He possesses an NBA body with broad shoulders, strong arms and lots of muscles. It’s just a matter of developing his skills and working on his lateral movement in order to show that he belongs in the league.

Lack of explosion, perimeter footwork and lateral defense seem the biggest concerns NBA scouts have regarding his possibilities to get drafted. It remains to be seen which position Papapetrou can defend in the NBA due to his athletic deficiencies, however he has the smarts, body and competitiveness to be at least a solid team defender at the NBA level. Papapetrou offers the specific skill NBA teams are looking for as he’s a fine -not elite yet- standstill shooter. Aside from his shooting touch, the Greek lacks reliable ball skills or the ability to create his own shot in a consistent manner. Nevertheless, he’s good character guy, coachable and hard worker. Not a high upside player, Papapetrou does possess role player potential at the NBA level.

NBA Draft 2014 Outlook

Workouts: none reported so far

Ioannis Papapetrou looks like one of the more ready players for the NBA, especially from a physical point of view. On the other hand, he is automatically eligible despite being only 20 years old. A team that will draft him will probably only bring him over in 2 years because of his buyout. This is an interesting situation as he can develop over 24 additional months in Europe to become a more versatile player. Papapetrou looks like a great get in the middle of the second round.
