FIBA U19 World Championship Preview: Argentina

June 20th, 2011 · No Comments

With the FIBA U19 World Championship approaching, we start a preview series with bloggers and journalists from around the globe giving information on teams from their respective countries. We will start the series today with a preview on Argentina, written by Facundo Iatzky.

There are high expectation with this team. This year, the organization of the Confederation was really good, and the team was training for months and also played a lot of friendly matches. Despite the lost of Matias Bortolin because of an injury, there are some good talents with the Argentinian team.

We begin with Patricio Garino: the new promise of Argentinean basketball had very good first year in Montgomery High School in Florida (USA), and he is followed very close by many NCAA colleges. Patricio will be the key on the offensive game.

The other players to watch are:

  • Marcos Delia: a tall player with great skills. Lot of expectations on him.
  • Carlos Paredes: He was the only player of the list who had important minutes in last season of Liga A (first division of Argentina). And he did it very well. Good shooter.
  • Luciano Massarelli: Another of the players who played U17 world championship last year (with Garino, Gallizzi and Bortolin). A bit undersized but very skillful. He also had minutes last year but in Liga B(third division).
  • Giorgetti, Copello, Giaveno, Perez and Diaz also were part of rosters of Liga A teams but did not play many minutes. They played mostly for junior teams, but it is good that all of them come in a good shape, after training with professional players all the year.
  • Podesta and Basabe played in third division. They can help the team specially in defense.
  • Attention to Gallizzi, a player who has a lot to work yet, but has a terrific physical conditions.

To finish, some words of head coach Enrique Tolcachier about how they come to the tournament:

The last friendly games were very interesting for our preparation. So we can be evaluating our physical, tactical and technical level. We still have things to work but we have 15 days that we are going to use , and we have very important games of preparation in Europe to get the best shape for the world championship.

CABB released the list of 12 players who will play yhe U19 world championship in Latvia. The list had one last minute change because Matias Bortolin suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Fernando Podesta.
