Douai World Tournament 2009 – teams announced

January 24th, 2009 · No Comments

The Douai World Tournament has announced 7 of its 8 participating teams. This year’s edition will be played with U19 National Teams that are in their preparation phase for the U19 World Championship that will be played in July in New Zealand. I take a quick look at the teams and who are the possible players to arrive in Northern France from 10th to the 14th June 2009.

The current confirmed teams are USA, France, Australia, Croatia, Lithuania, Puerto Rico and Canada. The 8th team to join will probably be Spain but this has not been confirmed yet. While the United States team is always quite a surprise to be announced, this year, the possibility of seeing the U19 National team participating may give them another dimension. The presence of Australia and Canada, which both were already present in Mannheim in 2008 gives the whole tournament a real “World” color and makes this edition one of the most impressive of the last years. Additionally, the participation of Puerto Rico will be very interesting with their usually spectacular playing style.

On the European side, you will see the classical teams like Lithuania with their guard terror and the inside presence of Donatas Motiejunas and Tautvydas Slezas. Croatia will probably bring a similar team to what has been in Douai last year with players like Tomislav Zubcic and Mario Delas. France will try to defend their surprising title of Douai 2008 behind the scoring efforts of their guard Andrew Albicy.  If Spain would join, it would be a superbly mixed and interesting field but it is still a long way until June.
