The rumors have been around for a few days now, today it is official. Robin Benzing will play for Michigan in the NCAA. The 2m10 tall German forward from TV Langen will continue his basketball education in Ann Arbor.
The announcement has been made today by the official website of the Michigan university.
University of Michigan men’s basketball head coach John Beilein announced Thursday (May 22) the signing of 6-foot-10 forward Robin Benzing (Seeheim-Jugenheim, Germany) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2008-09 season.
The risk that Benzing will lose one year of eligibility is however very present. As he played in the German ProA this season, in a team that also featured professional players, the NCAA rules may prevent him from being aligned with the College team during the 2008-2009 season. A similar case happened this season to two other German prospects: Lucca Staiger and Fabian Böke.
Robin finished the 2007-2008 season in the ProA with averages of 8.0pts 2.6rebs and 0.4blks per game. He hit 50.5% from 2 and 25.7% from behind the arc. In the U19 NBBL league, he averaged 22.5pts, 5.9rebs and 2.0blks while shooting 62.1% from 2 and 37.3% from 3.
